Bola Babarinde, the former chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in South Africa, has called for the implementation of capital punishment for corrupt Nigerian leaders. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Babarinde argued that the introduction of the death penalty could serve as a stringent measure to restore accountability and integrity in Nigeria’s public offices.
Babarinde highlighted concerns about the ostentatious display of wealth by some public officials, suggesting that a robust audit of their assets is necessary. He pointed out that many officials’ luxurious lifestyles raise questions about their financial integrity, emphasizing the need for a system to monitor and curb excessive displays of unexplained wealth.
The former APC chairman also criticized the current administration for failing to effectively address the erosion of public trust and the scarcity of genuinely service-oriented individuals in government roles. He advocated for a reduction in public officials’ salaries and allowances by 60%, arguing that this would reflect a commitment to fiscal responsibility and transparency.
Babarinde also addressed other issues, including the need for public officeholders to adhere to traffic regulations and the rising cost of staple foods in Nigeria. He attributed the food crisis to inadequate local production and disruptions caused by climate change and criminal activities, particularly in northern Nigeria.
He suggested that Nigerians in the diaspora could contribute valuable insights and solutions to national challenges if their perspectives were considered.
