Kebbi State is grappling with a catastrophic flooding crisis that has resulted in at least 30 fatalities, the destruction of over 800,000 rice and crop farmlands, and the washing away of more than 326 houses. The dire situation was disclosed by Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Culture, during a press conference held in Birnin Kebbi.
The floods have affected 16 local government areas, displacing numerous households that now seek refuge in makeshift camps and schools. In response, the state government has initiated a temporary relocation of these individuals, providing them with relief materials to help alleviate their losses and suffering.
However, Ahmed cautioned that without immediate national and international assistance, the state’s food supply could face severe disruptions, potentially leading to acute food shortages across Nigeria. He stated, “The situation is critical, and we need help to prevent a humanitarian crisis.”
To address the ongoing disaster, the Kebbi State government has activated an emergency flood defense mechanism aimed at ensuring rapid responses to flooding incidents. Furthermore, they plan to collaborate with traditional rulers to educate communities about the dangers of constructing homes on floodplains and blocking drainage systems. If necessary, households that refuse to comply with safety regulations will be relocated to safer areas.
