Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reaffirmed their support for Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State, declaring him the party’s leader in the state. This stance comes amid escalating tensions with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who has threatened severe repercussions if PDP governors interfere in Rivers State.
Governor Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, emphasized that the governors are steadfast in their support for Fubara. Speaking after meeting with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), Mohammed stated that efforts are underway to reconcile Fubara and Wike, despite the latter’s recent inflammatory comments.
Mohammed highlighted that the PDP’s decision to back Fubara as the party leader in Rivers State is both lawful and appropriate. He underscored the importance of allowing Fubara to lead the party’s structure in the state.
“We are committed to ensuring that PDP’s values of unity and respect for leadership are upheld,” Mohammed said. “We are actively working behind the scenes to facilitate a resolution between Governor Fubara and Minister Wike.”
The ongoing conflict between Wike and Fubara, characterized by Wike’s threats and Fubara’s leadership role, has created significant tension within the party. However, the PDP Governors’ Forum remains dedicated to fostering reconciliation and maintaining party unity.
