On Tuesday, the Nigerian Senate passed a bill to establish three new federal institutions in Edo, Delta, and Imo States. The bills successfully scaled their third reading during the Senate plenary, which was presided over by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.
The newly approved institutions include:
- Federal University of Sports Afuze, Edo State (Establishment) Bill, 2024.
- Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, Otu-Jeremi, Delta State (Establishment) Bill, 2024 (HB. 221).
- Federal College of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Sciences, Isiala Mbano, Imo State (Establishment) Bill, 2024.
In addition to the establishment of these institutions, the Senate urgently requested an apology from the Libyan government following the mistreatment of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, during their arrival for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The Senate condemned the incident as disgraceful and a violation of human dignity, calling it an unfortunate disregard for international standards.
This resolution came after a point of order raised by Senator Sumaila Kawu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, who invoked Order 42 of the Senate Standing Rules for a personal explanation.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin condemned the treatment of the Super Eagles in Libya, labeling it unacceptable and contrary to the principles of sports. He emphasized that sports should promote unity, competition, and camaraderie among nations on the continent.
