Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly facing increasing pressure to run for the presidency in the 2027 election, primarily from Northern political leaders discontented with the current administration’s policies. These leaders believe that Jonathan would be a preferable candidate due to his promise of a single four-year term, given his prior term in office.
Sources close to the situation, including those from Boss Newspaper, have suggested that Jonathan is viewed favorably by some Northern political stakeholders because of his perceived better attention to Northern issues during his presidency compared to former President Muhammadu Buhari and the current President, Bola Tinubu. The sentiment is that Jonathan’s return could address the current economic and security challenges, attributed to the ruling APC’s policies.
One prominent figure expressing this view is Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who has announced that he will not contest the presidential race in 2027 if Jonathan decides to run. Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors Forum, praised Jonathan’s leadership and expressed his willingness to support Jonathan’s candidacy wholeheartedly if the former president chooses to enter the race.
Mohammed highlighted that during Jonathan’s tenure, prices of goods were more stable, and the administration was more attentive to the needs of the Northern region. He lauded Jonathan for his inclusive approach to governance, which included initiatives for unemployed youths and addressing issues like the Almajiri system.
Governor Mohammed emphasized Jonathan’s experience and leadership qualities, stating, “If we can persuade him to come forward, I will support him with my blood. Out of modesty, he is still not ready. I hope you will meet him and encourage him to run.”
The pressure on Jonathan reflects a broader discontent with the current administration and a desire among some political factions to return to what they perceive as more favorable conditions under Jonathan’s presidency.
