FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, conveyed the message through a statement released by the Corps Public Education Officer on Wednesday in Abuja. He shared his thoughts and prayers with the people of Jigawa, following the devastating explosion in Majia, where 94 people initially lost their lives while attempting to scoop Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from a fallen tanker.
The incident highlights the need for strict adherence to safety protocols, Mohammed noted, urging road users to wait for FRSC emergency personnel to manage such situations. He emphasized the dangers of being near tankers, particularly those carrying flammable materials, as they pose a serious risk of fire and fatalities.
The fire broke out when villagers rushed to collect fuel from the tanker, which had detached from a DAF vehicle after the driver attempted to avoid a speed bump at high speed. While the driver and his conductor survived the crash without injuries, the resulting fire claimed many lives.
Authorities have since updated the death toll to 147, according to Shu’aibu Hambali, Chairman of Taura Local Government Area, who shared the figure during a live broadcast on Arewa Radio. Mass burials were held for the victims.
Mohammed has called for further investigation into the crash and instructed FRSC officials at tank farms to enforce stricter safety measures before tankers are allowed to transport flammable materials. The injured victims are receiving treatment at Ringim General Hospital, Jahun General Hospital, and Khadija Clinic Majia.
