Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has encouraged Nigerian youths to approach their future with confidence and resilience, despite the current challenges facing the country. His message came during the passing out ceremony of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members at the Lagos State Orientation Camp.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Suleiman Olanrewaju, Makinde reflected on his own experiences and addressed the corps members with heartfelt advice. The Governor, whose daughter was among the corps members, used his personal experience to underscore the importance of the NYSC service.
Makinde reminisced about his own NYSC experience 34 years ago, highlighting that many current corps members might one day rise to significant positions, such as governors or presidents. He emphasized the opportunities that the service provides for personal and professional development, including forming lifelong relationships and business partnerships.
The Governor shared a personal anecdote about his daughter’s NYSC service, revealing that she faced bullying during her time at the camp. “I couldn’t believe my daughter would stay here for three weeks when she initially wanted to stay just one night,” he said. “She enjoyed her time but faced some bullying. This is part of the real world, where protection is not guaranteed, and you have to navigate challenges on your own.”
Makinde expressed gratitude to the camp officials for their support and for making his daughter feel welcome. He also cautioned corps members against unnecessary travel, which can lead to accidents, and encouraged them to make the most of their service period to build a solid foundation for their futures.
Concluding his address, Governor Makinde urged the youths to be confident and resilient, asserting that the current challenges faced by the country will eventually be overcome. He reassured them that their service will play a crucial role in shaping their futures and contributing to the nation’s progress.
