In light of the ongoing economic challenges in Nigeria, Vice-Chancellor of Precious Cornerstone University, Timothy Adejumo, has called on the Federal Government to provide support to private tertiary institutions. Speaking at a press conference marking the institution’s third convocation ceremony in Ibadan, Oyo State, Adejumo highlighted that many private universities are struggling to cover operational costs as student fees no longer suffice.
Adejumo urged the government to allow private universities to benefit from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, emphasizing that these institutions play a crucial role in the education system by offering an alternative to public universities.
He added, “Private universities are helping the government to train students who would otherwise be idle. The government should not discriminate. Private institutions need financial support, and lack of funding is a significant challenge.”
During the convocation, 118 students were set to receive degrees, including 14 First-Class, 65 Second-Class Upper, 37 Second-Class Lower, and 2 Third-Class honours. Adejumo reaffirmed the university’s commitment to fostering exceptional character and entrepreneurship among its students.
