Ejiofor (surname withheld), one of the illegal revenue collectors apprehended along the Enugu, Abakaliki, and Ebonyi highways, revealed that unemployment drove him to this illicit job. He claimed he was hired by a contractor to collect revenue for the Ebonyi State government but was unaware that his activities were illegal.
The 35-year-old was among 20 individuals recently detained by the Nigeria Police Force for unauthorized revenue collection and multiple taxation. The operation aims to support federal policies against economic sabotage and illegal taxation.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, stated that these arrests are a crucial step towards eliminating illegal activities, fostering economic growth, and ensuring the smooth transportation of industrial and agricultural products on the nation’s highways.
