In a recent meeting in Abuja, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, reaffirmed their commitment to press freedom both in Nigeria and across Africa.
During the visit, Ambassador Mills emphasized the importance of supporting press freedom and highlighted the ongoing cooperation between the U.S. and Nigeria. “We had a constructive discussion about our shared goals and the role of press freedom in democratic societies,” Mills stated. “We aim to strengthen our collaboration to tackle issues like disinformation and misinformation.”
Mills noted that many democratic nations face challenges with fake news and disinformation, and stressed that his visit was to support and enhance efforts towards ensuring a free and robust press.
Minister Idris reciprocated the commitment, affirming that Nigeria is dedicated to upholding press freedom. “The ambassador and I discussed various issues related to media freedom,” Idris said. “I assured him of our efforts and progress in maintaining a free press, which is essential for any democracy.”
Idris praised the Nigerian press as among the freest globally and reiterated the government’s dedication to further enhancing media freedom. “We are committed to ensuring that press freedom continues to thrive and evolve,” he added.
