Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents launched a violent attack on Mafa village in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State on Sunday, setting fire to houses and shops, and causing numerous fatalities.
DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Yobe State Police Command spokesperson, confirmed the incident on Monday. The attack began around 4 p.m. when the insurgents, armed with rifles and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), arrived on more than 50 motorcycles. They targeted Mafa ward, burning down numerous properties and killing many residents. The exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed.
The attack was reported to the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Station by local residents Babagana Goni and Bako Ibrahim. According to Abdulkarim, the attackers also distributed fliers with Arabic inscriptions, adding to the terror.
In a related incident, on Friday, terrorists attacked a private school in the neighboring Geidam area, resulting in the death of three students and injuries to one.
