In a heartfelt tribute, Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi has celebrated the career of legendary Portuguese defender Képler Laveran Lima Ferreira, commonly known as Pepe, who has officially retired from professional football after an illustrious 23-year career.
Pepe, who began his professional journey with Portuguese club Marítimo in the 2001/2002 season, had a standout career that included stints at FC Porto, Real Madrid, and a final chapter at the same Porto club. His tenure at Real Madrid was particularly notable, where he was part of a team that secured three UEFA Champions League titles in just two years, among other honors.
Sanusi, who plays for Porto, shared the pitch with Pepe during his time with the Portuguese club. They won several trophies together, including the Portuguese League, the Portuguese League Cup, and the Portuguese Super Cup. Sanusi took to social media to express his gratitude and admiration for Pepe, who concluded his career having played 878 games, scored 50 goals, and provided 36 assists.
Pepe’s international career was equally distinguished. He played a crucial role in Portugal’s Euro 2016 victory as an assistant captain and was part of the team that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. His final major tournament, EURO 2024, saw him deliver a solid defensive performance before Portugal’s quarter-final exit to France.
Sanusi, currently recovering from a cruciate ligament tear, acknowledged Pepe’s impact on both club and international football and paid tribute to the defender’s contributions and legacy in the sport.
