Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed confidence that the ongoing political struggles faced by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, will ultimately shape him into a stronger political leader. Speaking at the 1st Etche Festival of Food, Art, and Culture Exhibition in Etche Local Government Area, Jonathan said the political challenges Fubara is currently navigating would help him become a “General” in Nigerian politics.
Jonathan, who was also conferred with a traditional title during the event, advised Governor Fubara not to be disheartened by the political adversities stemming from his strained relationship with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Despite surviving an impeachment plot and enduring ongoing political turmoil, Jonathan reassured Fubara that such trials were necessary for building strong leadership.
“I know you are passing through challenges, and at occasions like these, I try to keep quiet. But this is the first time you are holding a top political office. You will pass through a lot. And just know that nobody becomes a General without fighting wars,” Jonathan said. He emphasized that these experiences were preparing Fubara for greater leadership.
Jonathan’s message resonated with the Rivers people, as he stressed the importance of unity and support for Fubara’s administration to ensure peace and progress in the state. He highlighted that Rivers, being a critical part of the Niger Delta, must remain stable, warning that any instability could have broader repercussions for the country.
“We want a peaceful Rivers State because Rivers State is the centre of the Niger Delta. If we create serious perturbation in Rivers State, we are creating a crisis in the Niger Delta, which is not good for our economy as a nation,” Jonathan noted.
Governor Fubara, in his address, thanked Jonathan for his support during the political crisis and expressed gratitude for the chieftaincy title bestowed upon him by the Etche people. He reaffirmed his commitment to improving the living standards of Rivers residents through continued development and social services.
Jonathan’s attendance and support during this event highlighted his continued influence in Rivers State politics and his role in promoting peace and collaboration across the region.
