The Kwara State Government has demoted and transferred a teacher at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, for assaulting a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.

The decision was announced on Wednesday in a joint statement by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, and the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, Mallam Tauheed Abubakar.

The teacher, Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike, was found guilty of fighting on duty, using foul language, insubordination, and disrespecting the NYSC uniform—a symbol of national service. These actions violated public service rules, the statement revealed.

Incident Details

The assault occurred last Thursday when the corps member visited the school to collect her clearance letter. Reports indicate she was verbally and physically abused, with claims that she was stripped by some teachers for allegedly failing to greet them properly.

Government Action

Following an investigation, the teacher was demoted by two grade levels, transferred to another school, and mandated to attend counselling sessions.

“The state government will not tolerate abuse of any kind,” said Bola Onile, the Press Secretary of the Teaching Service Commission. “We deeply regret the teacher’s behaviour and assure the NYSC management that this does not reflect the values of Kwara State.”

NYSC Reaction

In response to the incident, the NYSC temporarily withdrew all corps members posted to the junior and senior arms of the school. The NYSC State Public Relations Officer, Oladipo Morakinyo, confirmed the move was to ensure the safety of the corps members.

The Kwara State Government has also pledged to improve training on teaching ethics and standards, urging teachers to remain law-abiding and perform their duties with professionalism.
