Former Italian sporting director Enrico Fedele has voiced strong objections to Napoli’s potential move to sign Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku as a replacement for Victor Osimhen. Fedele argues that Napoli is stronger with the Nigerian forward in their lineup.
Osimhen, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, renewed his contract with Napoli last December, which includes a 130 million euros release clause. Despite this, there is a gentleman’s agreement that would allow him to leave if the clause is activated.
Napoli is currently negotiating with Chelsea for Lukaku’s permanent transfer, with Osimhen potentially moving to Chelsea on a temporary basis. However, negotiations are complicated by Osimhen’s reluctance to accept a loan deal with an option to buy.
Fedele suggests that it might be more beneficial for Napoli to retain Osimhen. He points out that while Napoli could receive around 90 million euros from Osimhen’s sale, spending 35 million euros on Lukaku’s transfer and 30 million euros on his salary might not be worthwhile.
“Napoli, with Osimhen, is a completely different team,” Fedele commented on Radio Marte via Area Napoli. “To compete in the Champions League, Napoli needs a strong midfielder, and ideally, Osimhen should continue leading the attack. His presence increases Napoli’s offensive strength by 50% and makes them serious contenders for top positions.”
Osimhen has been absent from Napoli’s five pre-season games, raising further speculation about his future before the transfer window closes.
