Amnesty International (AI) has condemned the demolition of communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), led by Nyesom Wike. The human rights organization accused President Bola Tinubu’s government of using the pretext of insecurity to evict FCT residents, handing over the land to private developers.
In a statement released on Sunday, AI stressed that the ongoing evictions and demolitions were illegal and violated both international and regional human rights laws. The organization expressed concern about the hardship imposed on the affected residents, noting that many were being left homeless amid the country’s current economic crisis.
AI called out the FCT administration for its use of insecurity as a cover for forcibly removing communities without providing adequate security. The organization described the evictions as a continuation of a practice where the poor are displaced to make way for the rich and well-connected. Amnesty also criticized the disruption caused to the residents’ livelihoods and children’s education, emphasizing that forced evictions are unlawful under human rights standards.
