The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, has affirmed that Comrade Philip Shaibu will continue to serve as the Deputy Governor of Edo State, dismissing the appeal filed by the Edo State House of Assembly. This decision upholds the Federal High Court’s earlier ruling, which invalidated Shaibu’s impeachment and mandated his reinstatement.

Shaibu’s impeachment on April 8, 2024, by the Edo State House of Assembly was based on allegations of perjury and leaking government secrets. However, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court determined that the impeachment process was flawed and ordered Shaibu’s immediate reinstatement.

The Court of Appeal’s ruling warns that any individual attempting to assume the role of Deputy Governor in Shaibu’s place will face legal repercussions. The court also nullified the appointment of Omobayo Godwins, who had been designated as Shaibu’s replacement.

Additionally, the court instructed the Inspector General of Police to ensure Shaibu receives adequate security to fulfill his duties as Deputy Governor until the end of his term. This ruling has exacerbated the ongoing political tensions within Edo State, highlighting deep-seated conflicts in the state’s leadership.
