The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Nura Mas’ud, for allegedly setting his 60-year-old grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, ablaze in Mu’azu village, Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area. The tragic incident occurred after a series of confrontations between the mentally unstable suspect and his grandmother, who had been expressing concern over his health.
According to reports, Mrs. Muhammad had frequently inquired about Mas’ud’s physical appearance and mental state, which reportedly aggravated him. In a confession Mas’ud explained that he was frustrated by his grandmother’s persistent questioning about his well-being. He warned her to stop, but when she continued, he resorted to a violent act.
Mas’ud admitted in the audio clip that he doused his grandmother with petrol and set her on fire to end her inquiries. “She frequently asked about my health, and I asked her what was happening to me, but she kept silent. That’s why I poured petrol on her,” Mas’ud explained.
Jigawa State Police spokesperson Shiisu Lawan Adam confirmed the incident, revealing that preliminary investigations showed the suspect suffers from a mental illness and has been receiving treatment at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital.
“One Nura Mas’ud, aged 26, poured petrol on his grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, and set her ablaze. The victim later died while receiving treatment at the hospital,” Lawan said.
Mas’ud has voluntarily confessed to the crime, and the police are continuing their investigation into the case.
