Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has expressed deep concern over the conduct of the recent governorship election, citing a blatant disregard for due process and the rule of law. His remarks came after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner. Okpebholo garnered 291,667 votes, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who received 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, who came in third with 22,761 votes.
In a televised address on Sunday, Obaseki called for calm among Edo residents and urged them not to resort to violence or property destruction in response to the election results. He advised aggrieved parties to explore legal avenues to seek redress.
“The strength of democracy lies in its ability to allow the people to choose their leaders. When this power is unjustly taken from the people, it undermines the essence of democracy,” Obaseki said. He acknowledged that many Edo citizens felt demoralized and powerless due to the perceived use of force and manipulation of institutions during the election.
Obaseki further emphasized the importance of peace and justice prevailing over violence. “Though many feel provoked and hurt by the election’s outcome, I urge everyone to remain peaceful. Peace and justice will ultimately prevail,” he assured.
The governor highlighted concerns from election observers, noting that impunity and a lack of respect for the electoral process were evident during the election. He urged those affected to seek legal remedies to address these issues.
“Clearly, the reckless disregard for due process in this election raises serious concerns. However, in a democracy, there are safeguards for resolving grievances. I encourage Edo people to continue with their daily lives, confident in the government’s commitment to their well-being and security,” Obaseki concluded.
