Meta has unveiled the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants, offering up to $2 million in funding to support AI-driven projects across various regions, including Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey. This initiative, announced on Tuesday, aims to encourage proposals from organizations leveraging Meta’s AI, Llama, to address significant social challenges.
Meta is seeking applications that focus on economic development, scientific innovation, public service, and other impactful areas. Winners of the grant can receive up to $500,000, with the announcement of selected projects expected early next year.
The grant is open to organizations based in countries where participation is legally permitted. Applicants must be established entities (not sole proprietors) and comply with specific requirements, including being in good legal standing and designating an authorized representative.
The application period runs from August 5, 2024, to November 22, 2024. Interested organizations can apply through Meta’s designated platform.
Kojo Boakye, Meta’s Vice President of Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey, emphasized the initiative’s goal to harness AI for societal advancement. He highlighted Meta’s commitment to using open-source AI to tackle global issues and promote progress in various fields.
To support applicants, Meta will host regional events, including virtual and in-person workshops and hackathons, in numerous locations worldwide. These sessions will provide technical guidance and may offer additional awards up to $100,000 for standout projects.
