Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically died in Kenya, four days after sustaining severe burns in a domestic violence incident. The Uganda Olympic Committee confirmed her death on Thursday, expressing profound grief over the loss.
President Donald Rukare issued a statement, saying, “We have learnt of the sad passing of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei following a vicious attack by her boyfriend. This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure.”
The attack occurred on Sunday at Cheptegei’s residence in Endebess, Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya. Reports indicate that her partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, allegedly poured petrol on her before setting her on fire.
Cheptegei, 33, had recently competed in the marathon at the Paris Olympics, where she finished 44th. Following the assault, she suffered burns covering 80% of her body and was admitted to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Kenya. Despite medical efforts to save her, her condition deteriorated, and she passed away on Thursday due to multiple organ failure.
A medical officer at the hospital confirmed, “All her organs failed last night,” marking the tragic end to her struggle for survival.
The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) also issued a statement mourning Cheptegei’s death and condemning domestic violence. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace,” the statement read.
