Former Manchester United star Andy Cole has expressed his disappointment over the ongoing criticism of forward Marcus Rashford. Cole, a strong supporter of the England international, voiced his frustration at the backlash Rashford has received, particularly following Manchester United’s recent loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Rashford, who has faced criticism from both fans at the stadium and on social media, has yet to score a goal in the Premier League this season after three matches under manager Erik ten Hag. Despite his struggles, Cole believes the criticism directed at the 26-year-old is unwarranted, especially considering Rashford’s long-standing ties to the club as a local Manchester boy.
In an interview with Mirror, Cole said, “It’s disappointing. With Marcus being a boy from Manchester and, considering how long I have been personally involved with the club, it’s the first time I have ever seen a local player have such a relationship with the fans.”
Cole went on to describe the situation as “surreal,” noting that fans typically rally behind homegrown players and the team as a whole. “For them to focus on one individual is a bit disappointing to see,” he added.
The former United striker emphasized that the only way for Rashford to regain the fans’ support is through strong performances and goals, reminiscent of his form from a couple of seasons ago.
Rashford will be looking to turn things around and lead Manchester United to victory when they face Southampton after the international break.
