The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has called on the Federal Government to take immediate action to address the escalating food prices and widespread hardship affecting Nigerians.
In a communiqué issued after their week-long second plenary meeting in Auchi Diocese, Edo, the bishops emphasized the need for government support for farmers through subsidies, soft loans, modern technology, and improved seedlings. They also highlighted the importance of supporting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to alleviate the economic strain on citizens.
The CBCN noted that Nigerians are currently struggling with high electricity tariffs, soaring costs of petroleum products, transportation, and healthcare, coupled with inadequate basic infrastructure. They urged a shift from a political ideology of self-enrichment to one focused on service and solidarity with the people.
In addition to their economic concerns, the bishops declared 2024 as the Year of Prayer, in preparation for the Jubilee Year of Hope in 2025. They emphasized that prayer should be accompanied by action and repentance on both individual and national levels.
The bishops also expressed concern about irregularities in worship practices, such as excessively long celebrations, undue monetary collections, and deviations from sacramental norms. They called for stricter adherence to approved liturgical practices.
The CBCN condemned the use of violence by protesters and the killing of citizens by security forces, reaffirming the right to peaceful protest. They urged the government to address the root causes of protests and to release all detained protesters.
Additionally, the bishops appealed for a review of economic reform policies to ease the burden on citizens and foster development that benefits the people. They also called for tax harmonization to prevent business collapse and encourage investment.
Finally, the CBCN urged all Nigerians to observe the Year of Prayer, engage in sincere fasting for the country, and seek the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen and Patroness of Nigeria.
