Former Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has paid an elaborate tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo as he marks his 89th birthday, describing him as a towering statesman whose legacy continues to shape Nigeria and Africa.
Dogara, who currently chairs the Board of the Credit Guarantee Company Limited (NCGC), praised Obasanjo’s lifelong devotion to the Nigerian project, noting that his journey from military command to civilian presidency reflects courage, resilience, and vision.
“President Obasanjo is a statesman of uncommon stature. His contributions to Nigeria’s unity, democratic consolidation, and economic reforms remain unmatched. He has consistently demonstrated that leadership is not about self, but about service to the people and posterity,” Dogara said.
He recalled Obasanjo’s pivotal role in strengthening democratic institutions during Nigeria’s transition from military rule, his bold anti-corruption initiatives, and his efforts to reposition Nigeria’s economy through reforms that opened new pathways for growth. Dogara emphasized that Obasanjo’s leadership was never confined to Nigeria alone, as his interventions in African peace processes earned him respect as a continental leader and global diplomat.
“Baba Obasanjo’s wisdom continues to guide our country through turbulent times. His courage to speak truth to power and his insistence on justice and equity have made him a moral compass for leaders and citizens alike,” Dogara added.
Beyond politics, Dogara highlighted Obasanjo’s enduring influence as a mentor to younger leaders and his role as a conscience of the nation. He noted that Obasanjo’s voice has remained relevant in shaping national discourse, often reminding Nigerians of the values of unity, discipline, and patriotism.
Concluding his tribute, Dogara offered prayers for the former president’s continued health and strength: “At 89, Baba Obasanjo stands as a living testimony of God’s grace and favor. May the Almighty grant him many more years of fruitful service to humanity, and may his legacy forever shine as a beacon of hope for Nigeria and Africa.”
Obasanjo, who has been at the center of Nigeria’s history for decades, remains one of the most influential figures in Africa. His birthday celebration is not only a personal milestone but also a moment for reflection on the enduring impact of his leadership, both at home and abroad.
