A retired Assistant Comptroller-General (ACG) of Immigration, Mr. Sunday Fagbamigbe, revealed that Nigeria has over 320 unmanned illegal border routes, contributing significantly to the nation’s insecurity. Fagbamigbe shared these insights during an interview with reporters on Friday in Abeokuta.
He explained that these illegal routes create avenues for insecurity, arms proliferation, and the influx of substandard goods into the country. To combat these issues, Fagbamigbe urged the Federal Government to invest in advanced security equipment at the nation’s borders.
He emphasized the need for modern surveillance technology due to the rising challenges of insecurity plaguing Nigeria. Fagbamigbe identified various forms of insecurity, including drug trafficking and human trafficking, among other threats facing the country.
According to him, effective border policing has transitioned from relying solely on human personnel to incorporating sophisticated electronic-based equipment for more efficient and results-oriented operations. He noted that Nigeria’s porous borders have facilitated the illegal drug trade and human trafficking nationwide.
Fagbamigbe advocated for the deployment of advanced technologies, such as electronic sensors, video monitors, and night vision scopes, which have proven more effective than human security measures in Western countries. He also suggested that incorporating artificial intelligence, drones, and dark fighter cameras could further enhance Nigeria’s border controls.
