Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia accused Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro (PDP/Benue South) of misleading the Senate regarding the recently concluded local government elections in the state. Alia made this statement on Friday through a release signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, which was shared with the News Agency of Nigeria in Makurdi, the state capital.
The governor recalled that while moving a motion in the Senate, Moro described the election as a “charade” and a “sham.” He further urged for the suspension of federal allocations to local councils in Benue.
In response, Alia asserted that the election was conducted in strict compliance with democratic principles and existing electoral laws. He argued that Moro’s claims stemmed from a personal vendetta rather than genuine concern for the democratic process. “The elections were conducted by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) and were widely recognized as credible and violence-free,” Alia stated.
He criticized the actions of Moro and his colleagues, suggesting they aimed to discredit the current administration instead of addressing their constituents’ needs. “Their collective actions serve a singular agenda of discrediting the people-oriented administration in Benue,” he said.
Alia also remarked on the video Moro used to support his claims, dismissing it as a poorly orchestrated attempt to undermine the state government. He emphasized that Moro and his colleagues must recognize how their actions alienate them from their constituents.
“It is crucial for these politicians to reflect on their roles and the trust placed in them. A genuine apology to their constituents and a commitment to serve rather than sabotage could be their path back to relevance,” Alia added.
