Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount ruler of Ijebu land, has been conferred with the title of ‘Amir ul Mulukil Muslimin Fi Bilad,’ meaning Commander of Muslim Kings in Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta States. The ceremony took place at the Awujale’s palace in Ijebu-Ode, organized by the League of Imams and Alfas in the respective regions.
During the event, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun urged Oba Adetona to leverage his extensive experience as a courageous and compassionate leader to promote unity, peace, and religious tolerance across the nation.
Governor Abiodun expressed that it is fitting for Oba Adetona to assume this leadership role, given his remarkable contributions to society. “Today’s ceremony celebrates faith, values, and courageous leadership as represented by the Awujale over the years,” he stated.
He further emphasized, “Our new Amir embodies compassion, wisdom, and integrity, the hallmarks of effective leaders. Your appointment symbolizes inclusivity, peace, and justice. You stand as a bridge between tradition and modernity, exemplifying religious tolerance.”
Abiodun encouraged the Awujale to utilize his new position to foster national unity, asserting that “no nation develops in a chaotic environment.” He reiterated his government’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to promote religious tolerance and strengthen national unity.
Additionally, the Governor announced the commencement of the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode express road reconstruction, noting that President Bola Tinubu has approved the project. He revealed that he had met with the President last week to seek intervention regarding the road, which has deteriorated over the years. “The flag-off for this critical road, serving 17 states in the southern region, will take place today,” he added, indicating that he would meet with the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, for the ceremony.
In his remarks, Professor Emeritus and Chief Imam of Gbagura, Abeokuta, Kamaldeen Balogun, urged the Awujale to continue promoting Islam’s development and the welfare of Muslims nationwide. He encouraged the royal father to champion the installation and burial of traditional rulers according to their religious beliefs, similar to his successful initiatives for royal fathers in Ogun State.
Prof. Balogun also proposed that the Awujale establish a university for Muslims or set up a world-class library to immortalize his legacy.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Asiwaju of Ijebuland, Alahji Adebola Adegunwa, former Deputy Governors Senator Adegbenga Kaka and Alhaja Salmot Badru, the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, and popular fuji musician Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde, among others.
