ABUJA – The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on citizens to prioritize unity and peaceful coexistence as the nation marks its 64th Independence Anniversary.

In a statement commemorating Nigeria’s Independence Day, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh emphasized the significance of national unity, social harmony, and religious tolerance in building a prosperous future. He commended the security forces for their efforts against terrorism and banditry but urged continued vigilance and support for initiatives aimed at enhancing safety.

Archbishop Okoh pointed out pressing national challenges, including education, employment, and equitable opportunities. He highlighted the importance of infrastructure development, economic growth, and youth empowerment for a brighter future.

He reaffirmed the value of religious freedom and mutual respect among Nigeria’s diverse faith communities, encouraging citizens to reject division and collaborate for a better future.

“This momentous occasion offers us a profound opportunity to reflect on our journey as a nation, to acknowledge our achievements, and to commit ourselves anew to the ideals of unity, peace, and progress,” Okoh stated.

Despite the challenges faced, he emphasized the resilience of the Nigerian people and their commitment to the common good. He urged citizens to renew their dedication to fostering national unity and social harmony, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence regardless of religious affiliations.

“In recent years, we have witnessed significant progress in addressing security challenges. However, we must remain vigilant and continue supporting initiatives that promote safety and security for all Nigerians,” he said.

Social justice is crucial for the nation’s aspirations, and Archbishop Okoh called for a focus on education and employment to empower the youth. He reiterated that religious freedom is a fundamental right essential to the national ethos, advocating for a society that values diversity and fosters unity.

“As we celebrate this 64th Independence Anniversary, let us hold fast to hope, unity, and a shared vision for a better Nigeria. Together, we can overcome challenges and celebrate the richness of our diverse heritage. May God guide us towards lasting peace and prosperity,” he concluded.
